Musings on London, The Tempest and A Regret-Free Life

September 5, 2011 by Farnoosh Brock

TheTempest_RalphFiennes

Two hours ago, I was in a small jam-packed London theater, joining in on a much-deserved standing ovation to the cast of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Some of the finest Shakespearean actors, most notably Ralph Fiennes, indulged us tonight with an unforgettably moving performance.

Pleasure, sadness, delight and joy, smiles and tears, deep reflection and thrilling sensations, these are only some of the emotions that come alive as you bask in the awe of a fine actor bringing to life a character from a 400-year old play. From Corporate to Entrepreneurship or Why I Left My 6-figure, Super Easy, Work-From-Home 11 ½ year Career

May 3, 2011 by Farnoosh Brock

From Corporate to Entrepreneurship

The most wonderful relationships can run their course; the greatest love affairs can go sour; the sweetest friendships can meet a bitter end and even the most invincible people may leave each other through death or divorce but I never saw a day that I would fall out of love with a company that was my pride and joy, my identity, my definition of productivity, and my one true measure of success.

They say people don’t leave companies; they leave managers.
Oh really? I specifically did not want to leave because I was blessed with wonderful managers.

I precisely left the company, the institution and the entity; I left what it had all come to represent, in exchange for its initial greatness. I left because I could no longer watch how far it had fallen from integrity and a sense of duty to what it used to consider its greatest asset – and what continues to be that asset, even as they turn a blind eye to it – the employees, the people, the soul and the heartbeat of the workplace. You, Your Travel Fears and The Fear-Crushing Travel Guide

April 29, 2011 by Farnoosh Brock

Sweet-Istanbul-Turkey

What many have said to me over the years:
“I wish I could travel like you.”
“You are so lucky to travel so much.”
“There is no way I can travel with my children.”
“Go on all your travels before you have babies.”
“Traveling is risky; it’s just not safe, not these days.”
“I love to travel, but I hate to leave home behind.”
And my least favorite:
“Oh yes, of course I am going to travel someday. You should see my dream list of countries to visit  …. someday. Someday soon!”

Traveling is so widely accessible to us human beings today that I wonder why those who dream and desire it so much are not out there doing it all the time! Some of us want to go to Europe; some dream of Africa. Some people want to travel to the far east. In fact, when I lived in Iran, taking a holiday in Cyprus was one of the most popular destinations. One day, I will need to make a trip just to Cyprus for that. Can you think of a place where you want to take a holiday and yet have not made any plans to go?

And yet real travel fears and anxieties stand in the way of even the best of our intentions, the type of fears that cripple the most steady dreams of travel in the most willing hearts and confident souls. [Read more…] about You, Your Travel Fears and The Fear-Crushing Travel Guide

Part 3: How to Organize the Ideas Worth Pursuing

April 2, 2011 by Farnoosh Brock

This article is part of a 3-series. Go here for Part 2 and Part 1.

If a cluttered desk signs a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?
~ Albert Einstein.

They say that geniuses do their best work amidst chaos and commotion. They say there is nothing orderly about prodigy minds and serious thinkers.

I tend to believe it. I mean, have you seen the desks, the white boards, or the working quarters of the most brilliant minds in history? It’s anything but organized! And it is not just the brains of a genius that produce brilliance in mayhem and mess. Our minds too seem to be far from orderly. Why is it that the most irrelevant thoughts and most unusual ideas come to us in the least likely circumstances and why do we go blank when we actively ask our brain to think and participate? Does order kill creativity? Does chaos bring out brilliance? Is our obsession with organization really just a way to distract ourselves from our real work in life? Part 2: How to Capture the Ideas Worth Pursuing

March 29, 2011 by Farnoosh Brock

Ideas Captured in a Book

This article is part of a 3-series. Go here for Part 1 and Part 3.

Ideas are born of your freedom to live life on your own terms, of creativity and of a desire to do things in your own way. Ideas are proofs to your independence as a thinker and a doer. Ideas fuel your self-confidence and fill up your desire to express yourself. Ideas are the seeds of great things in your life and can grow to sustain your ideal life if you capture and nurture them.

So to good ideas, you must hold on, just as you would to a long lost friend, to a special memory, or your own childhood work of art (I have all of one drawing that made it from my childhood, thanks to my sweet cousin who kept it from 30 years ago but I digress). With the right cues and questions, you will uncover those brilliant ideas from the sea of many that hit you in the course of the day — or for those of you with an overactive imagination, in one hour.
