The pursuit of massive wealth can be a wonderful thing, but it is the most beautiful of all when pursued with meaningful work on your own terms.

A little over six months ago, I embraced uncertainty like a long-lost friend and walked out of my corporate “career” of some 12 odd years because I could not rest if I betrayed my calling one more minute. The most wonderful relationships can run their course; the greatest love affairs can go sour; the sweetest friendships can meet a bitter end and even the most invincible people may leave each other through death or divorce but I never saw a day that I would fall out of love with a company that was my pride and joy, my identity, my definition of productivity, and my one true measure of success.

They say people don’t leave companies; they leave managers.
Oh really? I specifically did not want to leave because I was blessed with wonderful managers.

I precisely left the company, the institution and the entity; I left what it had all come to represent, in exchange for its initial greatness. I left because I could no longer watch how far it had fallen from integrity and a sense of duty to what it used to consider its greatest asset – and what continues to be that asset, even as they turn a blind eye to it – the employees, the people, the soul and the heartbeat of the workplace. What many have said to me over the years:
“I wish I could travel like you.”
“You are so lucky to travel so much.”
“There is no way I can travel with my children.”
“Go on all your travels before you have babies.”
“Traveling is risky; it’s just not safe, not these days.”
“I love to travel, but I hate to leave home behind.”
And my least favorite:
“Oh yes, of course I am going to travel someday. You should see my dream list of countries to visit  …. someday. Someday soon!”

Traveling is so widely accessible to us human beings today that I wonder why those who dream and desire it so much are not out there doing it all the time! Some of us want to go to Europe; some dream of Africa. Some people want to travel to the far east. In fact, when I lived in Iran, taking a holiday in Cyprus was one of the most popular destinations. One day, I will need to make a trip just to Cyprus for that. Can you think of a place where you want to take a holiday and yet have not made any plans to go?

Big life-changing decisions should come about after agonizingly long hours of thinking and plotting, analyzing and scrutinizing, predicting and planning. People should not make decisions that change the course of their life in one day or one hour or one minute.
