Maybe You Weren’t Meant to Have a Boss!

“You weren’t meant to have a boss!” wrote Paul Graham on his blog in 2008.

It’s a popular piece that taps into the psychology of whether we as human beings are meant to have bosses. It’s a wild article. He compares us to lions in Africa, then weaves in our attachment to junk food and the unnatural way we have to act in large companies and concludes with the crazy notion that perhaps some of us were simply not meant to have a boss!

How to Write 5000 Words a Day: 3 Irrefutable Rules

November 14, 2012 by Farnoosh Brock

The Apple Friendly Writing Desk with Thunderbolt Mac

I am not doing NaNoWriMo, the brilliant writing challenge of November in which thousands partake. I should be though. But this November, I am writing 5000 words a day into my own non-fiction ‘novel’.

I am writing my next book and digital product, How to Crack the Code to Get Promoted (at your corporate job) and apparently, I have a lot to say on this topic. Lucky you, if you want the little-known secrets that no employer tells you but badly wishes you knew so you stop making the obvious mistakes and start closing the gap between what you need to do and what you think you need to do to get that darn promotion and move up the ladder already, but I digress. Episode 68: Why Being a Copycat Destroys Your True Essence

November 9, 2012 by Farnoosh Brock

Welcome back to our Episode #68 of The Daily Interaction podcast. Today’s topic is inspired by a personal story; I titled it: Why Being a Copycat Destroys Your True Essence, and yes, there is a copycat in my life and you know what, she is sadly destroying her own true essence by copying work and my style and my way of running my business, and what a terrible act of self-sabotage.

November 7, 2012 by Farnoosh Brock

What You Don’t Know about Your Employer Is Hurting You

Getting promoted and moving up the corporate ladder, making big bucks and becoming indispensable, is not as confusing and hard as you may think but you make it harder with what you don’t know. (Don’t worry – I was in your shoes back when I worked at the Fortune 100 tech giant too). Let’s fix that, shall we?

That’s not a marketing tactic to get you to read this blog post, you can stay or go but it doesn’t change this ugly uncomfortable fact, one that I discovered 5 years into my 11 1/2 year career at this Fortune 100 networking giant (and subsequently mastered for the rest of my career, which was quite rewarding) and one that rings true in major corporations in America as well as in a few other Western cultures.

Fact: If you do not know these truths, and you are an employee – especially a loyal and hardworking one – then you are hurting your career and your future opportunities. A lot. [Read more…] about Uncommon Career Advice: 8 Reasons You Are Not Getting Promoted
