Yoga Yearning

Yoga has been a falling into Awareness and Acceptance for me. I believe that yoga chooses you. You do not choose yoga. And it chooses you only when you are ready. For me, I halfheartedly stumbled into my first yoga class in a YMCA in early 2002 when I finally came to the decision that any more of my normal routine exercises would cause serious damage to my body. But it was not until the second class that I realized I had come home. Yoga was home for me. It was time to heal, and I have been healing, growing and falling in love with yoga since. My fantastic journey started then, and if yours has not yet started, I envy you for what could be awaiting you on the horizon of your yoga life.

Here in this space, I share with you my yoga journey through a series of videos from home practice, personal accounts of visiting yoga studios at home and while traveling the globe as well as any other yoga explorations such as workshops, conferences, and reviews of podcasts and books on yoga.

"Do your practice and all is coming" -Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the father of Ashtanga.

It is only now, after nearly 8 years of on and off the mat practicing, growing, regressing, obsessing, trying, giving up, and returning again and again to yoga, that I am making a small breakthrough, one for which I dearly wish a permanent stay. The irony of the breakthrough itself is humbling. It is imperceptible [...]

The other night, I was lost in the mesmerizing world of photography, browsing from one photographer’s site to another, basking in the stunning photographs, the art, the creativity. Then I watched a short video of a photographer’s journey through his career. During the video, he said, quite simply, “Winter always comes.“, referring to the doubts that [...]

The most rewarding things in life seem to get kick started by an unfortunate event of some sort, it seems. Or is this just true for me?  Knee pain from rigorous exercise brought me to yoga. Heart break brought me to the love of my life. And chronic pain from nerves, joints and muscles in my [...]

One look at the beautiful photograph of Kathyn Budig in a gorgeous yoga pose on the wall of a studio and I instantly knew that this workshop had my name written all over it. My name. My heart. My soul. My very core.
My yoga teacher Vickie tells me yoga is not just about the [...]

The day that I had been planning for in the last few months had finally arrived, Monday, November 2nd. The entire living room had been transformed into a photography studio! All the furniture moved about, the rug rolled up, the hardwood able to breathe again, two tall rods on tripods providing a cushion for several long, white, transparent, sheer [...]

Yoga Flow Series 2: Inspired by the rain

by Farnoosh on October 15, 2009

in Yoga Yearning

Eric Schiffmann’s book continues to tap into a curiosity that I cannot seem to quench.  I still remember taking his class in the only yoga conference I attended in 2003 in New York City when I was too new to yoga to appreciate fully what he was teaching – and yet, he made a permanent [...]

Yoga Flow Series 1: Welcoming Fall

by Farnoosh on October 4, 2009

in Yoga Yearning

Finding stillness and quiet in the vibrating energy of life is my latest pursuit. A few days ago, feeling hopelessly at the mercy of my persistent left arm pain, I set an intention to turn seriously into my yoga and meditation to heal. I remember my unfinished attempt at the bible of Stillness, the Eric Schiffman [...]

It is with a basket full of sweaty yoga laundry and a heart filled with ecstasy that I write to you about my first experience from a 10-day yoga challenge. It is not easy to find time to practice things we love. Yoga can fall in that melancholy category.  To practice regularly, we need to spend a few minutes every day or every other day on the mat. It is a commitment to the mat and to ourselves and it takes discipline. Discipline has a [...]
