My Top 10 Pillars of Blogging Excellence: Part 1

by Farnoosh on June 25, 2010 · 58 comments . For the Mind

Content is king (or queen if you will permit me the variation), no questions asked. The personal (in your eyes) and perceived (in the eyes of others) success in the blogging world belongs with those who can clearly articulate their thoughts, connect with the heart and mind of their readers and consistently write authentic content even on non-original commonplace topics. It is your writing voice that carries you through and through!

With that slap of truth out of the way, I admit I have been itching to write about blogging beyond the writing. I want to write this post my best discoveries in this world of changing and evolving technologies. I want to share only the top tools, platforms and applications which I use to create and maintain Prolific Living. I call them my indispensable pillars of blogging excellence and I must share the genius of these pillars with you.

This is Part 1 of 2 where I share the first 5 of Top 10 indispensable Pillars of Blogging Excellence. Part 2 of this topic in the next post reveals the next 5.

1 Macbook Pro for Computer Platform

The confessions of a true Mac convert are generally tinged with a bit of regret and a large dose of happiness and mine are no different. The regret is not from ditching the PC or heavens forbid, missing it in any way shape or form. Far from it. The regret is the whispering wonder why you did not ditch it sooner!

The Macbook Pro has revolutionized the way I do anything but mostly the way I blog. I do not think of my Coco as an expense; I consider her an investment into my time, my effort and my sanity. She is the ultimate blogging machine! I also think it nonnegotiable to be in love with the machine with which you spend hours upon hours of your days, much the same as with your partner in life. A casual so-so affair just won’t do the job well!

Virtual Windows on Mac
What I love about my Macbook Pro in a nutshell:
Fast.
Stable.
Intuitive.
Beautiful.
Virtual windows!
Smart.
Reliable.
Simple File Structure.
Flow of Applications.
Manageable and Delightful.
User Friendly. User Lovely even!
Does not try user’s patience or sanity by bizarre untimely crashes.

2 WordPress for Publishing Platform

WordPress is the unmatched king of publishing platforms for bloggers. It is worlds ahead and beyond Blogspot which I used in my dark early days of blogging. Transition of archives to WordPress from Blogspot was a breeze and the possibilities that opened up with WordPress are still amazing me. I could see the potential only one week into using it and now, a year and a half and a few thousand hours of playing around later, I still think WordPress and the entire community around it rocks. Choosing the right platform is like choosing the right tango shoes (super important!). It makes or breaks the dance!

WordPress Screenshot

Why I love WordPress for blogging in a few words:
Open Source: created by a community of developers (as opposed to licensed software.)
Thousands (10,060 listed just on the site) of plugins, 1200 themes, and tons of widgets to enhance the plain vanilla (which is pretty darn nice to start with!)
Free. Completely free!
Supremely intuitive and powerful user interface.
Easy to use visual editor (like Word but better) or the HTML/PHP editors as needed (geeky and sometimes necessary!)
State of the Art (in their own very true words).
Professional and Reliable.
Compatible with Thesis (#3) and Scribe (#4).
Powerful and Expandable in Features.
Discussion forums and the knowledge
Stays up-to-date with fast-paced technology and user community demands.
Community support for your questions.
Hundreds of users and blogs dedicated to WordPress understanding and improvement.
Made with blogging visionaries in mind (it sees the future before it gets here!)
Smart and Simple. Love it.

3 Thesis for Blog Theme of Choice

August 2009 marks the day Prolific Living grew up and started hanging out in the park with the big boys and girls. No doubt she is still a baby but she is prepared for the games. All this to mean, I broke down and splurged on the fabulous Thesis Theme and have not regretted it once. I went from one great free theme to next but always lacked one thing or another. Thesis is simply brilliant, genius, and revolutionary; that Chris Pearson guy is not just a cute face!

Thesis Design Options

Why I am in love with my Thesis Theme in a tiny nutshell:
Professional.
Well-worth the one-time price.
Upgrades are free for lifetime.
Powerful and Feature Rich, well beyond what I have explored.
Optimized for Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
Adds speed to your blog.
An education robot on many aspects of blogging.
Probloggers love it. Probloggers USE it.
Works well with Google search engines (I am simplifying the best complexities of this Theme and not doing it justice for sake of brevity)
The support forums rock! (Godhammer and GirlieGeek are two of the most responsive and knowledgeable people, think little Chris-Pearson robots, they answer questions on the forums in a matter of minutes! Can you pay for support like this? Apple makes me wait longer on the phone!!)
Talk about State of the Art.
All these and many more, it makes you want to get up and squeeze it tight with a big virtual {hug}!

4 Scribe for Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

A few months ago, I decided to invest yet again on one more thing: Scribe for SEO. A few of my blogger friends use it and the hype around it is respectable as is the source (Copyblogger). I am overall happy for the investment. The Scribe team provides good support but has been slow on just a couple of minor issues, mostly feature enhancements sent by yours truly. I really believe my blog’s SEO has improved with Scribe. I like to think of Scribe as a supervisor in making sure you are doing your SEO right rather than a slave doing your SEO for you, so beware of the difference!

Scribe SEO Plugin Screenshot

Why I think Scribe is a good investment:
Goes hand in hand with Thesis.
Score my work on SEO and suggests how to optimize it to get a better score.

Professional bloggers use and recommend it.
Simplifies the complex topic of SEO by putting a structure around it.
I really believe it increases the ease with which my posts are indexed.
The support team could do a better job though – I suggest learning from Thesis (#4 above) top-notch players in their field!

5 iPhone Apps for the Mobile Blogger

Some iPhone Apps

Have I mentioned how I feel about the iPhone? This is not just a love-love relationship based on good looks and sweet whistles. The iPhone is brilliant for making a mobile blogger happy. What are you doing to turn your blog into a professional-looking one on your readers’ Smart Phones? See my list of indispensable iPhone apps.
On the photo to the right, you can see some of my favorite iPhone apps for blogging with the butterfly marker!

What I love on the iPhone for blogging:
WordPress Mobile Admin (Safari version) You have got to have this free remote WordPress plugin!

Blog on the iPhone with WPTouchWPTouch iPhone ThemeThis little guy turns your blog into a professional layout on the iPhone, my best discovery yet!
Dropbox and Evernote (more on my love affair with these 2 in Part 2 of this post) – Take notes, record ideas, snap photos, and sync up to the server cloud and to the Mac for backup!
Hootsuite (Twitter) and Facebook for social media networking
Gmail (even for multiple accounts) to be connected with readers and bloggers!
iTalk Lite – to record your thoughts and ideas on the go!
Safari - Safari is the innate app to iPhone and enables you to access the WPTouch of which you see a screen shot (on the right) as well as WordPress Mobile Admin. Learn to navigate your Safari well!

Summary and your Thoughts

Wooh! These guys were not easy to line up, even when I broke it into two parts. These apps are not just for blogging either as you can see, think of all the brilliant uses in which you can engage them!!! Well, I am off to rest my pretty fingers for all of 5 minutes and then prepare Part 2 of the genius applications and services for us.

Until then, tell me please:
What are your favorite applications, tools or services?
Do we have any love affairs in common here?
Are you a Mac or PC blogger (or user)? If you are a PC user, do you think Mac users are all nuts or just healthy advocates? :)
And anything else you care to comment or discuss or argue with, go for it! I can take it!!
As always, thank you for reading!

Hey Farnoosh, Awesome! I use all of those except a mac. I love my iPhone just as much as you do and I use that iPhone theme which is just superb. I’m also a Scribe user, I think it’s a brilliant piece of software and definitely worth the money. You’ve covered everything that I can think of from a blogging perspective without referring to extra plugins bells and whistles!

Hi Amit,
I am glad we share the love of the brilliant iPhone and yes the theme is an amazing transformation of the blog’s regular web page to a super pro look! I am glad to hear you like Scribe also. Thank you for the vote of confidence. Of course naturally I use a lot of other plugins too but like you say, not as important as these guys! Thanks for your thoughts!

What I love about your blog is…you are very clear! And the photos and the yoga stuff and…well…everything. I have a PC and I have a blackberry…I can’t go wishing or wanting something different because right now I don’t need it.

I do love scribe and great content, theses theme so hey…I’m moving right along and when I get the need I’ll refer back to you and be on with my online life; ) Have a great weekend.

Hi Tess,
I had both of those until last year. I loved my blackberry bold. I used to type so fast on that thing, the one thing I have yet to do on the iPhone, and funny enough, the one thing that kept me from getting an iPhone…..They worked just fine for me during the other stages of blogging and I really think technology can be a personal thing and a form of habit too. If it works, why change it….You can always, always come back here and always ask me anything regarding what I use and how I use it etc. Great weekend back at you!

Hi Farnoosh. I loved this inside look at some of the favorite blogging tools, and I especially loved how you gave so many reasons as to why these tools are favorites.

I’m a PC user, simply because that’s what I’ve always used. I have family members who are Mac enthusiasts, so I’m convinced they are great :)

I opted for Headway for a theme because it was so easy for me to use as a beginner. I’ll see if I like it as much as the blog grows and I want to try new things.

My favorite tools that you don’t have listed (maybe part 2?) are aweber (I would give it a kiss if I could) and the Ninja Affiliate plugin from Max Blog Press because it makes keeping track of affiliate links easy.

Jean, good to see you. I had to share the reasons to do my advice justice (and those were just some of the reasons when it comes to the Mac!). I was really attached to my PC when I had it too and it was great in what I needed at the time – the Mac world is just a different one. Ah good to know on your theme; that seems to be a popular one but I hardly think of you as a beginner! And no, I don’t have aweber or the Ninja plugin in part 2 but checking it out right now…..thank you for sharing!

Hi Farnoosh,
You are a master at organizing your thoughts. They are presented so cohesively that they even make sense to me (a well known technophobe). When I first started blogging and twittering it seemed like a foreign language. But by getting on the ‘Doing ladder’ it slowly became clearer and clearer. Thanks for sharing more tips. Your organized mind is a great reflection of your deliberate living.

Rob, that’s wonderful that you think so, given that I had to do this post under pressure and deadline with everything else going on these last 2 days! More than anything I love your articulation of my writing, thank you for the warm compliments!!! It was and sometimes still is a foreign language to me but I am lucky in that I love languages ;) !
Book is coming along slowly with my other priorities in the way but I am committed to it, I promise….thank you for writing such a lovely comment here!

Farnoosh,
YOU are AWESOME!!! I love this!! And…it also makes me feel good that I’m using several of these, too! I haven’t converted to the Mac just yet…though!!! And – a couple of new iPhone apps for me to check out – how cool!!!

Have a FAB weekend!!

Lance, ditto back at you. It’s ok, you can use the PC and I still love ya :) ! At least you are on the iPhone and we can speak that language to each other, no? Are you using that one single plugin to make your site appear pro on the phone? I highly recommend it! Thanks for saying hi!

Hi Farnoosh,

I’m a PC – Dell 13″ XPS laptop. So yeah I think some of the Mac lovers are a bit nuts :) . No really we have a Mac as well. But I use the PC.

From the tools you listed I use and LOVE Wordpress I think it is the best platform. And if people are not ready to invest in their own self-hosted blog, wordpress.com is a great introduction.

I’m leaning towards Headway for a theme. I haven’t done it yet.
No smart phone here. I have the dumbest phone on the face of the planet. And it’s good for me.

For blogging: I use a free software by Microsoft ..gasp! :) called Live Writer. It is a brilliant application for writing offline. Helps a lot with the distractions.

Thanks so much for listing the tools you use. I’m always curious to know more so looking forward to the second part.

Manal, thank you for sharing…..love to know what my friends are using especially since I did research on this before splurging on the Mac but could hardly find any input on Mac vs. PC for blogging.
Wordpress, we don’t have a disagreement about, good to know! Jean uses Headway for a theme too and I like both your layouts very much.
Of course the best part was your comment on your dumb phone – thank you for the laughs! And anything to help with distractions in this world I think you should hold on to !!!
Part 2 on the way and out Tuesday. Thanks for reading!!

Hi Farnoosh, it was cool to see what kind of apps you use for blogging. I pretty much use the same apps in terms of WordPress and Thesis, but I’m using a PC laptop that my uncle bought me. I think Mac users are healthy advocates though. :) I’m using TweetDeck but I’ve heard a lot of good things about HootSuite. What you shared here was awesome; I can’t wait for the next 5.

P.S. I also think Godhammer is really, really knowledgable and cool person. He always answered my toughest questions and I think I have bothered him too much, haha…

Sibyl, my dear Mac fan friend, I do think it’s life changing too – without a doubt. My theme needs so much work, there is so much I have yet to do with Thesis but the foundation is great, thank you so much for your words, I am glad to have found you too!

Hey Farnoosh, You are a woman who knows what she likes. Phew! I was happy to see Sibyl pipe up and say she’s a Mac user. Yikes, what’s wrong with all these PC folks. Every time I get on my daughter’s PC, I want to kick it for being so user annoying. Oh well. Once they convert, they’ll get it. Love love love my Mac. I use Frugal, another great theme, haven’t tried your other tools but I’m not a mobile blogger. Anyway. Great post.

Ah Katie, another Mac lover…..I think it’s interesting that you as Mom are on the Mac and she as daughter on the PC! I love how anything and everything is possible with technology. Your theme is super awesome and I don’t blog so much on the go as I try to keep up and maintain the blog so I think it’s important to have the best tools at my finger tips and also on the one that makes the blog look good to make sure that the smart phone users can read it properly if they hit up the site! Thank you for being here, Katie!

Hi Farnoosh,

Talking about clearly articulating your thoughts…you’re the Queen of that :) You recently pushed and inspired me to continue with my travel blog. And yes, I find it important even if it were just for the reason of archiving my memories…I have discovered that even the smallest experience (at that time maybe insignificant) can result in a wonderful story.

I don’t mind if you see yourself as a Mad Mac user :) I guess we all need to be a little crazy in order to survive.

Thanks for another great post!

Yes, I do want to hear your travel stories and I am waiting with baited breath. These are really memories you are documenting first and foremost for you. Think about how it feels to read them in 10 years, it’s so much better than just looking at a photo alone! And spinning an ordinary experience into a story is the skill of a good writer, which you, of course, are!
Ok, glad you accept me and my Mac affinities. Watch out for Part 2 on Tuesday. Thanks again for all your support Emiel!

Great post Farnoosh, supremely useful to noob bloggers like myself. I love wordpress too and have gone for the frugal theme which I like for its simplicity. I am in love with my iPhone (typing this on it now) and have got an iPhone 4 sat in a drawer waiting for the number to be transferred over (how frustrating is that!!!) I know nothing about scribe but will be doing some investigating after I’ve typed this. I’m looking forward to part 2 for more top stuff :)

Frugal is popular even on these comments, Katie uses it, and simplicity is key! Ah another love affair with the iPhone, I knew I wasn’t alone! Part 2 out Tuesday. Let me know what you think, it’s more on the artistic, creative side of things!

I agree with you wholeheartedly on two points (and on the rest it’s not because I disagree but more because I don’t feel qualified to say!). The day I started using a Mac (and that was in 1985) was the day I was turned on to personal computing. I have had Macs ever since – though I have used PCs at work and the little cheap netbook we bought for travel. My current Mac is the macbook pro – lovely machine. (Two Macs ago I had the clamshell one – it was just gorgeous but I understand it didn’t attract the men!)

Point 2 is wordpress. The first blog I set up was a group blog for my f2f eading group using Google’s blogger. It was a great learning exercise but as I used it and started to be part of the blog world I realised that wordpress was a far better way to go and so when I set up my own blog that’s what I chose. I guess I am trying to understand now why I would want to pay for my own domain rather than use the free wordpress host. Would love to hear why people do this…

28 Farnoosh June 26, 2010 at 11:50 AM

Whisperinggums, I’ll take whatever agreement you send my way! I love your dedication to the Mac even as it has gone through heaps of transformations from the 1980s! I used them in the 1990s in college. Macbook Pro is the best, same here.
Wordpress rocks. I used Blogspot too and it was just a learning curve and then it ended!
So I do pay for my own domain, I think it’s psychological, I want to own the entire domain and not be tied to Google or Wordpress domains. I don’t know all the advantages you would get but you can set up websites not just blogs based on your own domain name whereas Wordpress is just (as I understand) a blog so you can expand your own domain in ways beyond the blog that Wordpress would not provide…..Thanks for being here and sharing those thoughts!

29 Amanda July 1, 2010 at 8:09 PM

Hey Whispering, I’m so glad to see you here, too. Farnoosh’s site is so inspiring!

My two reasons for changing from Wordpress.com to a self hosted blog:

1. I could add java-based content (like Goodreads and Shelfari) – and you can use Google Adwords and other monetization methods (if that’s what you’re into – I realise not every blogger is interested). Wordpress hosted blogs don’t allow this.

2. I could customize the look and ‘feel’ of the site to exactly match the vision in my head. Wordpress hosted blogs are good – but using the Thesis theme, I’ve been able to have my blog do things that are light years ahead of the free Wordpress-hosted blog

Of course, self-hosting isn’t for everyone, nor should it be. So it’s really about thinking about your needs and where you’d like to go with your blog.

30 Farnoosh July 1, 2010 at 10:10 PM

Amanda, thank you for filling in those great reasons. I admit I did not know them because I never went to .wordpress.com domain but I did start with blogger which I think is at a real disadvantage compared to Wordpress. Glad to meet another Thesis lover too!!

31 whisperinggums July 2, 2010 at 4:49 AM

Amanda, Farnoosh and I met each other via your blog – so thanks for that.

re Wordpress. I don’t think I’m interested in monetising my blog. Maybe that sounds silly but I’m just here for the fun – I have enough to drive me LOL! And, I think I have enough income to do what I want to do – I know I’m lucky that way. BUT, for interest, what are the things you can do on you own domain that make it worthwhile leaving the free host?

Hi Farnoosh
Content is Queen sounds good to me…. LOL
Such a comprehensive post, I’m not sure what to comment on.
OK Wordpress as the publishing platform – got to agree one hundred percent or as we say in English football circles, one hundred and ten percent.
Easy to set up, lots of free themes and premium themes, constant updates (mixed blessing) and so much free information out there on how to get started.

Perhaps I should finish with a word of caution…. security!
Because it’s open source, anyone can download Wordpress and find its security flaws.
Anyone setting up a Wordpress site should initially spend time looking at security.

37 Farnoosh June 27, 2010 at 6:28 AM

Glad we agree on that first bit. You don’t want to disagree with me right off now, do you Keith? :)
Ah security, very good point. I am very lucky in that my little brother is my IT guy but we do have some security plugins on the blog and it is extremely important to be aware of hacks, do several backups very frequently, and never login from any other computers than your own. These are just a few. I think Wordpress.org has a great list of security plugins to start anyone off too. Thank you Keith!

Anyone interested in Wordpress security should take a look at John Hoff’s site. He has some great security videos including how to set up a firewall.

Keith, yes, as soon as I read a security leak at someone’s blog, I installed that plugin right away (with clearance from IT department first, of course). Yes, thank you for the tips on security!!! It goes without saying but it is never a bad idea to say it anyway!

Hi Farnoosh,
Honestly, until a few months ago, I didn’t even have a computer or Internet access on my boat..so having my little laptop and Internet access is a big step for me. My first blog was written on the library computer with only one hour a day increments of time…no camera, no computer…
So, I’ve upgraded a bit *grin*…I’m all about the least amount of technology possible in my life..and I’ve had some amazing results with my blog and my business with just the little bit of technology I do use…However, I also recognize if I improve the quality of my resouces, I improve the quality of what I share…

Dear Joy, how nice to see a fresh perspective. I am very encouraged by your story and the minimal use of technology. I think it’s brilliant how you are able to contribute to the blogging world from that angle and the possibilities are indeed limitless with the low barrier to entry to our great world of blogging. Thank you for sharing your approach to blogging and I think if you were to write a post on the minimum technology it takes to write a very good blog post (I read your latest), it would make for a popular read. We are the masters of technology and you seem quite in charge. Very nice!

John, you are very, very welcome. I kept the techie part to a minimum because the big picture is always so much more important to me. So glad you enjoyed it. Part 2 comes out tomorrow and it’s a bit longer but it appeals to your sense of style and creativity as a writer/blogger/computer user. Hope you enjoy and share your thoughts on that too!! Many thanks for your comment.

Fantastic article – right after my own heart! I am still using a PC, but I can assure you, that I will be converting to a Mac next financial year. I am so over virus checkers and other behind-the-scenes doovers slowing everything down. Don’t start me on the woes of McAfee!! GRR@#%$!!!!

I have Onlywire for SEO, but I’ve heard great things about Scribe, so I’ll check it out over the weekend.

As for Wordpress… is there any other choice? I am ASTOUNDED how many bloggers hamstring themselves by sticking to Blogger. Is it something to do with the ‘innovation’ that Blogger has recently introduced: dreadful templates designed to create blogs that like much like the MySpace my daughter had when she was 15?

This is brilliant! I’m going to link in on Friday’s Hop!

And now… on to read part II

Dear Amanda, hi!!
Thank you so much for your wonderful thoughts! No no no calm down and let the PC exit your life as quietly as possible – the Mac bliss will make you forget it ever existed, I promise you! Let me know if you have Qs about Scribe (or anything for that matter)…..Gosh I can’t believe it either on Wordpress vs. Blogspot or other types but I respect people’s choices and it depends on where people want to take their blogging career. Thanks for the link love and Part 2 is up and ready for your thoughts, don’t hold anything back ;) !

Oh Farnoosh, how did I miss this post!!!!! Excellent! I enjoyed have an actual look at Thesis, which gave me a positive impression of its accessibility. It was also interesting to read about scribe.

Thesis does look beautiful on your blog. Now that more and more people are using it though it seems to be everywhere, which gently nudges me in other directions. I really like the theme I am currently using, Inuit Types. There is a free and a premium version.

At the moment, I remain on WordPress.com for its ease of use and other numerous benefits. I’m not ready to jump into self-hosting at this point.

Thanks again for the terrific rundown.

Hi Sandra, it’s alright – the posts don’t run off anywhere after I publish them! I love love Thesis, I had to keep myself from writing a few more chapters about it. Scribe is good too, I really think so. I have SO MUCH to do with my plain blog layout but this is the very basic of Thesis….I think gentle nudging is how we best manage change and if something works for you, why change it. You are most welcome and thank you for reading!

You have so much here, it is hard to know just where to begin, Farnoosh. Smart of you to recognize beginners.
I am onto reading Pillars part 2. I am new but I have several of your suggested tools already in place but nice to be assured I’m headed in the right direction
