Have you moved to the world of electronic books yet?
I had been trying in vain. I even bought a Kindle; I have yet to really use it. The thing is, traditional books are a pain to give up. I am addicted to turning the pages, feeling the text, holding the book, marking my place, writing in the margin, and seeing a visual progress from start to finish. As if that is not enough for a permanently happy relationship, I like the absence of technology in a book. These sweet elements add pleasure to my reading experience. A shift into the electronic world, even for an avid consumer of technology such as myself, almost feels like a betrayal to the true essence of books.
Even so, something happened last week quite unexpectedly to change my view point: out of pure curiosity, I installed the Stanza App on my best friend in this world – my genius iPhone! The Stanza App people tell us:
Stanza is a Revolution in Reading. A free application for your iPhone and iPod Touch. Use it to download from a vast selection of over 100,000 books and periodicals, and read them right on your phone. It’s a wireless electronic library that stays open 24/7.
And they are not kidding! This little application is a revolution in reading. In under 3 minutes, I had started reading Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and had no intention of stopping. The strangely addictive story telling of Lewis Carroll was combined with the sharp, clean format in which the text appeared and the swift way with which the pages “turned” with a touch of my fingertips. Soon this turned into a healthy obsession and in 3 days, I had finished a book I would have otherwise not ever read. I share the unique benefits of this new reading experience with you in these words:
Filling the Idle Minutes of your Day:
I did not read hours at a time; I simply filled the random minutes of an average busy day with pure reading. Minutes when I would be eating my breakfast, waiting for my tea to steep, enjoying a car ride or waiting in line at checkout. I also moved my social media buttons to the last page of my iPhone to eliminate the idle distractions which steal those minutes from me day in and day out. What if you had something to show for at the end of the day for those subtle, hidden minutes?
A Dictionary at your Finger Tips:
I may be alone in this but I rarely look up the words I do not know when reading a novel. The context will simply have to give it away, that or I ask my husband: “Quick! What does this mean?”. I don’t much care to interrupt the reading flow to accomplish the task of looking up a word, easy as it may be. With Stanza, the dictionary is naturally one of the main tools incorporated right into the application (same with the Kindle). You click on a word, look it up and are back to reading without shifting an extra muscle or disrupting your zen mode. I admit, I looked up a lot more words (strange, bizarre words I would never use in conversation but no matter) in reading “Adventures of Alice in Wonderland”.
Free and Instant Access to a World Classics:
Welcome to the world of free books! The Stanza gives you instant access to more than 25,000 digitized books thanks to Project Gutenberg among many other sources. I dare say you will never finish even the best of the free collection with all the time in this world. The very best part of reading this way is how you would read what you otherwise never would. I can honestly say that Alice in Wonderland is no where on my long reading this but curiosity about the influence of this book in pop culture as well as just pure enjoyable unplanned nature of the reading took over and I went with the flow without changing much of my priorities.
Using Annotate Feature for Book Blogging:
Stanza application allows you to “make notes on the pages” by annotating sections that you wish to reference later. This took a little bit of editing as I wanted to group some of my annotation but it is an excellent tool for remembering your favorite sections or writing a book blog. It was also an empowering section, reminding me I am still in charge and I am the reader even in this virtual reading mode and that was important to my psyche!
A Tiny Device to Carry Books Large or Small:
This is where economy of space wins over big time. Carrying your books everywhere with you in the palm of your hand. I admit, it’s quite powerful. Add to that the secrecy of you reading without anyone noticing. You could be reading the world’s greatest novel and mistaken for just checking email. Reading is such a deeply personal habit that now you can do it in private while in public. I just like the clandestine nature of the whole operation.
At least, I have a new found respect for reading in an electronic medium and feel only excitement and appreciation for tools which enhance my reading experience. The Kindle awaits me next as I find the perfect balance between traditional and electronic books, all for the love of reading and reading as much as conceivably possible.
As for this children’s literature classic, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, I loved Lewis Carroll’s unique writing voice; I nearly wish I read this story as a little girl but we are never too old even for children’s books! It’s a wonder because I hardly enjoyed another classic, “The Wizard of Oz“. I always want to understand what makes some books become such a monumental part of pop culture and find their way into our everyday idioms and expressions. There was a momentum pushing me forward in this story, deeper into the rabbit’s hole and all over wonderland with its bizarre nonsensical happenings. I think this book is a classic because of the play on pure logic and the simple ways it shines a light on the obvious. The fantasy world aside, those bits of logic add food for thought for all of us and here are some of my favorite words and passages:
Alice: “Oh dear! I’d nearly forgotten that I’ve got to grow up again! Let me see – how is it to be managed? I suppose I ought to eat or drink something or other; but the great question is, what?”
Caterpillar: “Who are you?”
Alice: “I – I hardly know, sir, ….at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.”
Caterpillar: “What do you mean by that? Explain yourself.”
Alice: “I can’t explain myself, I’m afraid, sir because I am not myself, you see.”Alice: “The way all the creatures argue it’s enough to drive one crazy.”
Duchess: “If everyone minded their own business, the world would go round a deal faster than it does.”
Alice: “Would you tell me please which way I ought to go from here?
Cheshire Cat: “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.”
Alice: “I don’t much care where – ”
Cheshire Cat: “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,”Alice: “Well! I’ve often seen a cat without a grin but a grin without a cat! It’s the most curious thing I ever saw in my life!”
The March Hare: “You might as well just say that ‘I like what I get’ is the same thing as ‘I get what i like’!”
The Hatter: “If you knew Time as well as I do, you wouldn’t talk about wasting It. It’s Him.”
Alice: “I don’t know what you mean.”
The Hatter: “Of course you don’t”, …. “I dare say you never even spoke to Time.”Alice: “I’ve had nothing yet so I can’t take more.”
The Hatter: “You mean you can’t take LESS. It’s very easy to take MORE than nothing.”Alice about the Mock Turtle: “What’s his sorrow?”
The Gryphon: “It’s all his fancy, that; he hasn’t got no sorrow.”(And my all-time favorite)
The White Rabbit asks: “Where shall I begin, your Majesty?”
“Begin at the beginning,” the King said gravely. “and go on till you come to the end; then stop.”

Hi Farnoosh,
So…that genius iPhone of yours just became even more genius!! (okay – and for the record….I’m off to check out this app as soon as I finish here)
I haven’t gotten into the reading of books electronically, either. I find that I become too distracted…and wander off to something else (in the electronic world). I’m going to try this app, though….because you are recommending it!! And – I happen to think the world of YOU…
Lance, compliments of that scale get you anywhere but I am not falling for your trick!
)
Seriously, thank you and you are far too kind, as always. I am not exaggerating and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the app. It’s all I can do to keep myself away from more reading on the Stanza til I finish The Lost Symbol (hard cover – have had it for months) and the one book I started with the Kindle but you shall LOVE the Stanza!
Farnoosh!!!
A trick!!!! (…you make me smile this morning…)
Okay – and I’ve installed the app….so will try it out later today!
Have a SUPER Friday!
I like ebooks, they are easy to use. I’ve been reading this way for some time already. Thanks for this post, Farnoosh!
P.S. Again IPhone… it’s high time for me to get it.
Roman, even I am waiting for you to get your iPhone. Sell something you own and get one
! It’s so worth it. So another ebook lover, I am happy to hear it. Thanks for dropping by!
I have been wanting an Iphone for some time, but according to my cell phone carrier I’m not eligible. ????
I shall fight to get what I want. Thank you for adding fuel to the fire. You’ve also made me want to read Alice in Wonderland!
Hi Jenny, iPhones are revolutionary – I wrote about them not too long ago. I think right now it’s only AT&T but I could be mistaken. I am SURE You can get one and if you have to switch careers, I think it’s worth it…..Thanks for sharing your thoughts and way to go on wanting to read Alice in Wonderland!
Thank you Farnoosh,
I live in Canada, and in my city there are only two carriers that carry the iphone. The one I’m with, and the one owned by the one I’m with, so I’m a bit reluctant to buy out a very expensive contract just to put more money in their pockets, lol.
(I’m laughing because it feels better than crying…)
I am holding out for just a few months then I will engage in battle if necessary!
Gosh I hear you Jenny – I was SO lucky I waited til the end of my contract then got the iPhone and it was an easy transition from Blackberry but hey, I am wishing you the best of luck…..Laugh and good luck with your iPhone – keep us posted!
Thanks, I will.
My current non-smart-phone will make the decision. It will either die, or drive me crazy, (it’s not a lot of fun to try to tweet and email with) at which point I will get my iphone… somehow!
Farnoosh,
I feel exactly how you used to feel and I’m stuck there! I have a blackberry not an iphone. What’s a girl to do? I don’t even know if there’s an app for that!
Tess, I had a blackberry til 2 months ago. I’d tell my hubby I am FINE leave me alone I don’t need to waste time with another toy and my Mac is my connection to the Apple world. Well, let’s not say he was right but rather the iPhone just found me…No clue on BB apps as I never had any but I suppose I’d like to know if you have read Alice in Wonderland now?
!
@Tess and Farnoosh, you know my brother has a blackberry…and he was raving about how he can read ebooks on it…but cant stand how small the screen is. But, apparently there is an app. I will just ask him and email you the details
Happy reading. But i still prefer good ol books. the more torn and old they are the more precious they become to me…ahh whats a traditional girl to do? I have been contemplating getting a kindle for sometime…but i think the kindle will actually turn into a kindle plane/car/bike with my little one around..So i better wait
Much Love to both you lovely gals…
Z~
Hi Zeenat, dearest, I am not surprised at all – Blackberry and all smart phones have similar book-reading applications. But one thing is for sure, you are not the only traditional girl here my dear. I LOVE books – I know I caused some panic among my closest friends when I wrote this but I did mention I am going to find a balance and gosh I am not giving up the books themselves for a while now. Just supplementing it with the Kindle and Stanza for those books I would otherwise not easily get my hands on….
Thank you for sharing those lovely thoughts of yours!
Hi Farnoosh
I’m like you, I love the feel of a real book.
I like to sit and highlight the best bits so that I can find them later.
The electronic format is gaining in popularity and it can only be a matter of time before children ask their parents… what’s a book mummy?
Guess that’s progress.
Keith, I am reviewing your post To-Day! And oh I do love my books too. More sad than funny on kids not knowing what life was like only 50 years ago…Gosh, it’s amazing progress but in a way the good old ways are good too. I am hoping to find a balance here….!
My first reaction to your post about reading on iPhone was ” Oh no, don’t give up real books!” But now after you described how easy & convenient is was… I always wish I had a book standing in line! You’re doing it again- making me look at things from a different prospective:)
Iryna, No way I am giving up traditional books. The ease of reading this book amazed me and yes, reading while waiting for things to happen during the day, what a great way to spend time. I knew you’d agree with that, you being the biggest and cutest book worm I know
!
I loved those lines from Alice in Wonderland! I haven’t read the book, but now I must!
I also using Stanza on my iPhone. Even though I want an iPad or Kindle, I can’t really justify carrying a laptop, an iPhone, AND a book reader when I’m traveling with a single backpack. Stanza is great!
I must confess, I don’t read nearly as much as I should. It’s something I’ve been making a conscious effort to do more of lately, so that I can improve my writing.
Regarding digital vs paper book reading: No matter what I do, digital books just don’t feel the same as regular books — they don’t give me the same “break”. I attribute this to the fact that I’ve been using computers nearly my entire life.
When I take a break and read a paper book, it’s a break from technology. It feels good for me. When I’m reading an eBook, it just feels like reading a web page to me, even if it’s not in a web browser.
However, being a nomad traveling with one backpack means I’m not going to be packing a paper library anytime soon. The eBooks are a phenomenal tool and they give us access to an incredible wealth of literary art at the touch of a button.
Ram, my dear nomad traveler,
!
I hear you – I hope you also have a camera and then you have our videocam (which may be same as your cam) but my gosh, one backpack. No way! I couldn’t do it.
Every hesitation you list here is what I have had and still nurse and what happened with the Stanza was complete accident. It was just an amazing driving force. I am not giving up books either but think of it as an opportunity to read what you never otherwise would – and you are still reading a book not a web page. That feeling will be clear to you because a classic sounds like what we find on the internet
As last resort, if you have no time to read, tell me what books I should read and review for us here…or search the repository of my book blogs for those you may not have time for, and I’ll do the reading for us!!!
Thanks for your sharing your unique thoughts.
You’re welcome!
One other thing I wanted to mention with regards to reading during gaps of free time was that I really enjoy having those gaps of doing “nothing”. I had tried being productive by using my iPhone for reading things in between tasks (I’ve tried books, RSS feeds, news, etc.) but I quickly got burned out. Those moments of downtime may be vital to us in this world of always-connected, always accessible, information overload.
Or maybe it’s just my brain needing a moment to recharge.
Ram,
!
You mean you are disagreeing with me?
Well, if it counts, I do scheduled “nothing” with meditation – but I just need to be productive during the day when I am waiting. I do hear you in that doing nothing and staring at life going on around us can be interesting too and especially for you in a far away land and I do exactly just that when I am on travel. I suppose it is a fair point to bring up after all and therefore I am agreeing with you
I so much appreciate this point Raam Dev. I find that the greatest benefit of meditation comes not just from sitting on the cushion but from also simply being aware in the present moment and resisting the temptation to always fill up my mind with more. I have an active mind, so this is a great temptation for me.
Hi Farnoosh,
I love Alice in Wonderland. The story offers many whimsical truths that give the reader pause. I’ve always loved the one you pointed out: Alice: “Would you tell me please which way I ought to go from here?
Cheshire Cat: “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.”
Alice: “I don’t much care where – ”
Cheshire Cat: “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,”
Many folks drift through their lives taking any road that comes along, simply because they have been told “it doesn’t matter”. This thinking feeds into a mood of hopelessness. When we are convinced that our lives DO matter, our powerful nature suddenly strikes through. This inner victory quickly translates to outer triumph.
And, I’m still not getting an iphone
Rob,
I’ll have you hooked on your iPhone before the end of the year so you have a little more time to be adamant about it.
Oh those punches of truths are going to stay with me and I am so glad you are familiar with the story too. Indeed, drifting in life is sad when we can set our own course. Love the explanation you added. Thank you!
Hey Farnoosh!
I must say, starting out, I was going to give you a high-five for hard-cover books! But I now feel like you betrayed us book lovers who won’t sell out to the kindle… jk
If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were working for Kindle or the iphone… you made a really good sell, even if you didn’t mean too.. I think I’ll purchase that Alice on my iphone now…
Parker,
!
No purchase necessary – It was FREE. It is one of the thousands of classics that is free on the Stanza app which is also free!!!! And I am a hard-core hard-cover book lover, even if that is a mouthful. Thanks for the compliments Parker but no covert operation to help make a sale for Kindle or the iPhone. At least not here
Thanks Farnoosh for the article. I personally read ebooks online. Haven’t tried the IPhone yet, but you have motivated me to get one
Dia, first priority met: You read books online
! I think the iPhone is great but reading ebooks, that’s really revolutionary for me…..keep me posted if you get one!
Ha ha, I totally can’t read on technology. Although, I do often choose/not choose books at the library because of their smell, or the font, or texture of the page because I know I just won’t read it! I’m probably missing some nice reading because of my commitment to sensory reading
Ali, I did not smell anything while reading Alice in Wonderland
!
I do know what you mean – although I hardly ever go to library between books that I received, buy or get for free but I also make sure to cycle them around for my friends and others to enjoy. Ah but the libraries of free books is astounding and I am loving this new-found way of reading even more!
Thank you for leaving a comment here for us with your thoughts!
Hi Farnoosh, interesting you say that because my cousin recently gave me the original Alice in Wonderland book to read after watching the latest movie (it was okay). I think this app that you’re sharing is awesome! It definitely beats flipping the dictionary or typing out dictionary.com every time you want to find a definition for an unknown word. What a nice time saver!
Hi Hulbert, I haven’t seen the movie and I think whatever it may have been, the way the book reads is extremely unique and rhythmic – it’s also a very quick read and a classic. I’d give it a try if I were you. Time saver indeed. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
